Just saw this on Shakespeare's Sister.

Minitrue, anyone?

This administration is bringing a mixture of "1984" and "V for Vendetta" closer and closer with everything they do.

Wedges
It seems that everytime people start to talk to others who don't already agree with them, the spinners come out with some topic or other that we can all hate each other over.

Whether it's religious folks yelling about abortion (again) or how gay folks marrying means the rest of us somehow are less married; or the politicos reminding us that terrorists are still out there to terrify us into blind obedience; or seemingly random raising of the terror alert level whenever His Regal Majesty Bush the Second's popularity drops, one after another, they try to prevent us from reaching out to each other.

They're even doing it to themselves. Whenever a member of one party tries for an agreement or even discussion with the other, they're given a reprimand by their party leaders, or even called "traitor". Traitor! For talking to a peer! A fellow Congressperson! Another American! My elected representatives, where are your loyalties? With only your friends? Or with all of America?

Fortunately, there's a simple (if not easy) way to fix the problem, to reverse the terrifying trend.
Talk to each other

The more we talk to each other, the more we can remember that we're all Americans, and we don't have to hate each other or beat each other.

Nor do we have the divinely bestowed right to be the moral, ethical, and legal authority over all our neighbors, near and far, telling them what's right, what's proper, what's permitted.
We do have the right to believe and practice what-so-ever we wish, provided we don't hurt, kill, or otherwise deny each other the same rights we have.

Whenever we start to forget that we're supposed to fear and hate the guy next door who doesn't agree with us, not the enemy overseas, an issue is raised to divide us, distract us with misdirected anger and mistrust for fellow citizens, and/or frighten us into giving them all the power they want.

As George Orwell said
Ignorance is Strength.

Our ignorance, their strength.

some details about my first post
One of the big reasons I'm so troubled about HR2679 is that a person can be fired from a job for being the wrong religion, and that person will have no legal recourse, because, being out of a job, they can't pay the lawyer.

If I lose my job, I lose my health insurance. I'm insulin-dependent diabetic. Without health insurance, I cannot afford the medicine that prevents me from dying.

So, if any action is taken against me for my religious beliefs, I will eventually run out of medicine, unless I can scramble to find another job. Within a month, because that's how long a supply my health insurance company allows me to get at once. And this particular kind of insulin is prescription-only.

Can't keep quiet
I've had it.

I cannot take this lying silently anymore. The House of "Representatives" has just passed an act that will not allow lawyers who accuse anyone of violating the Separation of Church and State portion of the Constitution of the United States to get paid for their efforts.

Yes, I know the ruling (HR2679) doesn't say that the lawyers can't get paid. It just says the the working-class or poor people who are most likely to need these cases have to pay the lawyers completely themselves. Most of them can't afford legal fees like this, so guess what that means.

Right! The people who need the lawyers can't pay them!! How many of these cases do you think will be tried after this? None at all?

Right again!

The only reason I can see for this kind of law is that someone who controls a politician is going to be trying to end-run around the Bill of Rights. They were too scared of the political backlash to actually try to change the Constitution, so they're making it impossible to enforce it. That's easier anyway. If you can't get anybody to prosecute those who break the law, you can leave the law enacted to give false security to those who actually need it.

Fortunately, this vile act hasn't gotten through the Senate yet. If you value your own or your neighbor's freedoms to believe whatever gets you (or them) through life, write your Senator and convince, beg, or assure them you will vote them out of power next time around if they remove your rights.

I'll be posting a bunch more; I'm sure that there will be many many more things you need to know about.

"And you never did think that it ever would happen again
In America, did you?"
Carlie Daniels Band," In America"

He's talking about Americans coming together to help each other; I hope he's right. It could just as easily be repeating "It can't happen here" over and over until it already has happened.

Current Mood: angry
Current Music: "In America" Charlie Daniels Band; check it out, it's great
